A coverup and witchhunt occur after a politician accidentally kills his mistress.
Commander Tom Farrell of the US Navy is hired to work for Secretary of Defense David Brice after being introduced by Scott Pritchard, Brice's General Counsel and Farrell's former college mate. At that meeting at a ball, Tom also meets the seductive Susan Atwell, the two who embark on a relationship which blossoms into love on both sides. It isn't until they fall in love that Susan discloses to Tom that she is Brice's kept mistress. When Brice discovers that Susan is seeing another unknown man (Tom), Brice accidentally kills her in a fit of jealous rage. In an effort to protect Brice against being charged for murder, Pritchard devises a plan that they will pin Susan's murder on a suspected but unsubstantiated Soviet spy, code named Yuri, who would have used her to gain intelligence into US military secrets. Yuri is to be whoever was Susan's lover, who they are unaware of is Tom. When they hand the case to Tom to investigate, they do not tell him that Brice was actually the one who killed her. During the investigation, Tom has to protect himself against anyone who may find out that he was Susan's lover and thus the suspected Yuri while finding out who really did kill Susan, which may be difficult if only because of Pritchard's goal to protect Brice at any and all cost, no matter who gets in the way.
As I watched No Way Out I realised that I had distant memories of having watched and enjoyed this before at some point in my youth. I hoped as it progressed it would hold up and still be as enjoyable - it was. As a thriller it is very satisfying. There are some excellent performances all around. Costner and Young were both great - although almost over the top cheesy at times. Patton and Hackman were exceptional in their sinister performances. They really made this work as at times the story line verged a little on the ridiculous side and you couldn't help but wonder at the credibility of some of the characters decisions. There are some extremely fast paced and tense action scenes such as the chase scene and the building search scene that really are edge of your seat stuff. As the film continues the pace grows and grows until it explodes into a frenetic and frenzied outcome. Just when you think it's all done and dusted the final scene reveals the biggest shock of all. Personally I did like the twist - but think that it could have been done more subtly and effectively. Overall verdict: solid 80's corruption thriller with some excellent acting that gave the story weight and made it work.
I just got done watching No Way Out a while ago and was three quarters of the way through before I realized I'd actually seen it before so I guess it didn't stay unforgettable to me, although I will say this was an extremely well done, sleek thriller with an interesting Premise. In spite of that, I didn't love it though it's tough to say exactly why. The best I can do is say that, the movie while not lacking a sense of intrigue, was at times very dull. The buildup is extremely slow, your waiting a bit to long for real tension to set in, and although it's very exciting at times it never reaches the on the edge of your seat excitement until the very end.
I was, however, very impressed with the acting in this, everyone was perfectly cast, and it remained interesting enough to keep watching but I did think it was Just a bit overrated(I have heard this described as one of the best psychological thrillers of all time.)While I definitely do not think it was that, The IMDb rating of a perfect 7, is probably about right.
I was a bit baffled by the ending which I may never understand completely. I will say it was a great twist in a sense, but it throws a lot of things into confusion and I can see I am gonna have to go on the IMDb message board to get an accurate sense of what exactly went on because darned if I understand it. I'm glad I saw it though, this movie was definitely well acted and original, if not my favorite. And lastly, oh those 80's hairstyles.... No Way Out's greatest prize is Costner, a leading man at last: fiercely good, intelligent, appreciatively sensual in a performance balanced perfectly between action and introspection. It's a movie that lends itself to more than one sitting, and when you go back, armed with full understanding, Costner's work seems even better than the first time, richer, more complex and many layered. a5c7b9f00b
